At its July meeting, CWEA LABS presented an overview of Los Angeles County’s Stormwater Monitoring programs. The featured speaker was Oliver D. Galang, P.E., Section Manager with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works’ Watershed Management Division.  Oliver described the Los Angeles County’s existing National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Stormwater Program and provided an update of efforts to modernize and expand these into a systemwide water quality monitoring system. On May 20, 2010, the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Los Angeles Basin Section (LABS) presented a regional composting update at the Monterey Hill Steakhouse in Monterey Park.    The featured speaker was Jeff Ziegenbein, Deputy Manager of Operations for Inland Empire Regional Composting Facility (IERCF).  The IERCA was created in 2002 by a joint powers agreement between the Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA) and the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (CSDLAC). The agencies have evaluated composting as an economically and environmentally sound method of beneficially reusing biosolids from publically owned treatment works (POTWs).

On May 25, the CWEA LABS Young Professionals toured the Bixby Marshland in Carson. Mary Jacobs of LACSD (shown left) started the tour by briefly explaining the background of the marsh. Historically, the current Bixby Marshland was part of a larger freshwater marshland called the Bixby Slough. Over time, development encroached into the slough and cut off its water supply. The overall health of the marsh declined. In the mid 1970s LACSD and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works agreed to protect a portion of the slough from future development. A pump was installed to supply water from the adjacent Wilmington Drain to the Bixby Marsh.

Classes

By SSCSC Committee

On June 16th  SSCSC held a joint workshop with CWEA for the Central San Joaquin Section. The host city was the City of Fresno.

With attendees in excess of 80 and with over 12 vendors, the workshop was considered a huge success.

Attendees repeatedly mentioned that the Central Valley lacked quality education and expressed their hope that CWEA and SSCSC would consider returning with a workshop in the area in the near future.

Five classes were offered as well as plenty of time for attendee and vendor interaction. The following classes were presented:

  1. Nozzle Technology and Cleaning Techniques – Rick Lewis
  2. Rodders – Tim Kenned
  3. Mechanical and Hydraulic Cleaning - Duane Johnson
  4. CCTV Inspections – Jim Aanderud
  5. Pump Station 101 – Denis Pollak

A special thanks goes out to everyone at the City of Fresno that helped make this workshop successful.
